Anberlin: Final Tour

Wow! What a show!

I first started listening to Anberlin back in 2006. A guy I was dating was a huge fan and introduced me to them. I fell in love with their album, Cities when it was released. If I had done the whole wedding thing “Inevitable” probably would have been our first dance song. “I want to be your last first kiss” I just love it!

One of my concert buddies here in Virginia is a big fan of them still. I kinda stopped listening around 2010-ish. However, when I heard this would be their last tour I set my mind on going. Things changed with my friend so she couldn’t join me. (Her husband surprised her and came home two weeks early after a nine month deployment. Best excuse I have ever heard!)

I am so so so thankful that I went to the show. I wanted to be close enough to see the stage, but being on the rail wasn’t important to me since I don’t know a good chunk of their music anymore. So I didn’t make a reservation at the early entry restaurant across the street. I got to the venue around 4. For New Politics there is usually around 20 people already in line by that point. For Anberlin there was ONE guy sitting there. So I did some shopping and came back at 5pm and I was I think #10 in line.

I ended up in the second row and met some nice people that road tripped from NC. The show was supposed to start at 8pm. At 8:02 the lead singer tweeted that the party was starting at 9pm. People got pretty anxious. I was frustrated, but I knew it would be worth the wait.

Finally the show started and it was just an amazing show all around. They were so good!! They had an ease on stage from doing it for 12 years, but it didn’t seem overly rehearsed like some “older” bands are. The 23 song setlist flew by! Twelve years of amazing music ending is an incredible thing to be apart of. They definitely are going out while they still have it. I really respect that. However now that I started listening to them again about four years, I wish there was another album on the way!

Since it is their last tour I decided to be one of “those fans” and I waited with about 30 other people for them to come to their tour bus. I met all the guys and got my picture taken with each of them. They were all very nice, obviously tired though. I almost missed one. I caught him right before he opened the food to the bus. I am sure he loved that. (Sorry!) It was cold outside, but definitely worth the wait. IMG_2412IMG_2436IMG_2456IMG_2470IMG_2472IMG_2483IMG_2601IMG_2509IMG_2518IMG_2541IMG_2602IMG_2603IMG_2595IMG_2597IMG_2600IMG_2604IMG_2606IMG_2607IMG_2608IMG_2609IMG_2611IMG_2612IMG_2613IMG_2614

It was such a cool experience. I am so so so thankful I went.

That time I ALMOST saw Fitz and the Tantrums

Back in June I went to the 96Xfest. (I wish I had blogged that, it was epic) One of the opening bands was Dirty Heads. The sound was a little off for them. I really wasn’t completely sold by their set. However, I enjoy their music and they have some PASSIONATE fans. There is no way they sound that they did that day at all of their shows. There was a monsoon before the show so I really think SOMETHING got messed up along the way.

A few weeks ago I saw they were coming to town again. I bought a ticket to give them another chance.

Well a few days ago the show sold out. Since I am not a die hard fan I decided to see if I could get an obnoxious amount of money for my ticket. If no one bought it I would go to an awesome show. It was a win win.

Well, it didn’t take long, someone bought my $30 ticket for $85. I probably could have gotten more. I was greedy enough asking $85.

I got home from selling the ticket at 3:30pm. I suddenly didn’t have plans for the night…

So I got online and looked for other shows. That’s when I saw it… Fitz and the Tantrums. I am a fan of them and I heard they are amazing live. The Walker has been my ringtone since April. I would love to see them live! Only issue is the show was in Philly. A five hour trip.

It was 3:30pm. The show started at 8:30pm. With an opener I figured F&T wouldn’t start until 9:30ish. So I bought a ticket, jumped off the couch, grabbed some snacks and left.

I was pumped! I had so much adrenaline from my last minute road trip. I didn’t even think for safety reasons to tell someone I was going to Philly.

As I was driving I started thinking. “No one knows I am doing this. I don’t know anything about Philly. I don’t know what the parking situation will be. I will probably have to park far away since I will be getting there so late. I might not be able to squeeze up close enough to see the stage. I am kinda tired.” The bad things added up… so an hour down the road I turned around. I stopped by my office to get the ticket on stub hub quickly. The ticket sold before I made it home from the office.

That was that! One day I will see them… I will just plan it better…

Curing Post Concert Depression

So I have been really missing the rich of live music. I have always been passionate about music, but until the last few years I didn’t have the money to really see it live. Plus the college I went to was in the middle of no where on the GA/FL line. But then in the last year and a half I have seen….

It is going to be a good few months for sure!

I love music. That is no secret. However, I have never been musically gifted. I played flute for a few years and wasn’t all that great. I can’t sing to save my life. But I love it. I spent several years dancing. Then in high school and college I was in color guard so I could perform and be surrounded by music. I loved being a part of the marching band. Later in college I joined Sigma Alpha Iota International Music Fraternity. Basically, music is a huge part of my life.

I get pretty passionate when it comes to music. However, I don’t know if I have ever had a band make my heart so happy like SomeKindaWonderful. Even with all the passion I feel towards certain songs, artists, bands… I don’t get wrapped up in the whole fan club thing. I don’t go for the whole Newbs, Beliebers, Smiles, Directioners, Katy Cats, Gaga Monsters, exc. However, this week I have definitely joined the Butterfly Militia. I want to share SKW with the world and I have been sharing it with anyone and everyone who will listen.

I could listen to their album for hours and not get sick of it. Every time I hear it, I feel like I pick up something new. Their songs are all unique and it keeps things interesting. They have music that appeals to all ages. I find myself telling my residents about them, my family and inlaws about them, and even people that are practically strangers on the street about them. I have never wanted to share a band this badly. These guys are too good not to be HUGE.

Jordy is the lead vocals. He is pretty awesome. He is a short white guy with some serious swag. His voice is just amazing! When he is on stage you can see his passion for what he does. He sings with everything that he has in him. I found out at one of the first shows he had a ridiculous fever. I would have never known! The dude goes on stage with light up shoes and some funky patterned pants. It is pretty ridiculous that he is able to pull it off! There is no one I can compare him too, he is just great.

(Matt) Gibson is freakin hilarious! I would love to have a beer with this guy, but looking at twitter, a shot of fireball might be more fun. He is the one who (I assume) does most of the social media, so I feel like I have a better grasp on his personality. He is pretty rad to watch on stage. He is pretty amazing on the guitar, ukulele, and I am sure whatever you throw at him. Again, the passion for music shows in every performance.

Sarah is freakin GORGEOUS! Like wow. I didn’t actually get to meet her in Atlanta which was a little disappointing. From what I can tell on social media she is pretty chill. Her Facebook and twitter seem very inspired. She is freakin hypnotizing on stage. She has these funky dance moves and she is totally in her zone on stage. It is really neat to watch! Oh and of course she sounds amazing too!

Then to be completely honest I don’t know much about Ben and Justin. Justin has a special place in my little musical heart because he actually came up to me in line to thank me for the arrangement I gave them. Again, just going above and beyond. I can’t really figure out when or how he came about with SKW. They don’t have enough interviews for me to figure it out. I know Sarah was hired in an audition. Gibson, Jordy, and Ben were originals. Then there was someone else who is in all the promos… now there is Justin? Maybe he is only along for the tour? Really no freakin clue. (If anyone reading this knows the answer, fill me in yo!)

They are probably sick of all my tweets, instagram posts, and snap chats at this point. I am not trying to be some crazy super fan. That isn’t how I want to be seen. I want them to know how much I love them and their music, but I don’t want to seem crazy. I just can’t help it, I want to tell EVERYONE about them. It isn’t my fault that they read everything that they are tagged in lol. They are really great people. They are so nice to their fans, they really take the extra time to connect. I am super jealous of the ones that have gotten to hang out with them before or after shows. I would love to get to know them outside of social media.

This group though. Seriously. Please go listen to them. Their music keeps me in a constantly good mood every time I listen to them. During the long 4+ hr trips to and from the shows I would play Burn and get that extra burst of energy I needed to keep driving. If you spent all this time to read this blog take some extra time and check out their music. The album is like $10. Somehow you can find $10 to spend on some amazing music. Or fine, it is free on Spotify. Tell me what your favorite genre is and I will hook you up with what song you should listen to first.
